This First Edition Set of The Tontine was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York with a Copyright © 1955 by Thomas B. Costain. The novel is an awesome book full of interesting characters who entered into The Tontine, which was a form of gambling, combined with a great income for those who outlived the others. The English tradition of a tontine cost each participant to spend 100 guineas to enter. When a person who enters dies, the money goes to each remaining participant as an annuity. As more people die, the people still alive at the end can receive large amounts of money. Those who participated in author Thomas Costain’s Tontine included ex-kings, princesses, millionaires, actresses, sailors, planters and portrait painters. The novel narrates their lives in a book containing romance, industrialism and the building of wealth by some at the ultimate demise of others.
Herb Ryman and Floyd Gottfredson we great friends as they shared extensive careers with Walt Disney. Disney hired Floyd Gottfredson as an in-betweener artist on December 19, 1929. In April 1930, he started working on the four-month-old Mickey Mouse comic strip with the promise that it would only be a temporary project. As it turned out, Gottfredson continued to produce the Mickey Mouse strip for the next 45 years. Floyd Gottfredson probably had the same impact on the Mickey Mouse comics as Carl Barks had on the Donald Duck comics!
Ryman joind the Disney Studios on Pinocchio in 1938. He also served as the Art Director on Dumbo, Fantasia, and Victory Through Air Power. He worked on The Three Caballeros & Saludos Amigos as a Art Supervisor. Herb Ryman is best known for his stunning conceptual drawings of Walt Disney’s Disneyland, Walt Disney World, EPCOT and Tokyo Disneyland where he inspired viewers since his very first 1953 drawings of the proposed amusement park that helped to secure the needed million dollars from the bankers to build the park.
