    Description

I cannot help thinking that it is more natural to have flowers grow out of the head than fruit. What do you think on that subject?
    Jane Austen to Cassandra
    November 6, 1799
What is more evocative of the Regency than a bonnet? Straw Poke bonnets like this one were worn for the duration of the Regency, as both the period fashion plates (1812 Costumes Parisiens and 1799, Gallery of Fashion) and period fashions (from the Kyoto Museum) show. The Poke bonnet-- literally "poking" out over the face to protect one's complexion from sun, rain and wind. Another, colloquial term for this bonnet was the "kiss-me-quick"-- looking at this period cartoon, mocking the extremes this fashion took, makes it easy to see how this name came about!
This straw poke bonnet has been trimmed with Ivory satin ribbon and and cream lace, accented with a striking Ostrich Plume.
This listing is for this bonnet, decorated as shown. Please contact me about custom colors and trimmings. I'm always happy to try something new.
