Lighted Buena Vista Visual Effects Award Recognition
Features Lighted Walt Disney Castle
If you are the ultimate Disney Collector, whose collection spans beyond what was available for sale in the parks or in the stores, then this item is for you! Up for sale is my Buena Vista Visual Effects lighted glass award / recognition given to a small amount of us in Management at the Walt Disney Company. It is so rare, in fact, that if everyone else who received one that day in 1996 still has theirs, there are less than 10 in existence. Given that some may have gotten rid of their awards, there may be even less.
It is a substantial, heavy piece. It stands 8 1/2 inches tall, by 6 1/8 inches wide with the base being 3 1/4 inches thick. The glass itself is very thick at 3/4 inches. The back of the glass is laser engraved in a 3-D relief with the Walt Disney Company Castle and Stars Logo. The proper (c) Disney appears at the bottom.
There is a light in the base and so when it is turned on, the Castle and Buena Vista Visual Effects glows. It came with several different color bulbs, which are included. Clear, red, blue, green and a golden yellow color. I'm certain today you could find a small C7 LED bulb that would rotate colors if you liked.
For those who don't know, Buena Vista Visual Effects (Buena Vista also being the street the studio is located on in Burbank) was the precursor to all Disney Visual Effects. It pioneered visual effects at a time when ILM and others were the big dogs. Some of the movies produced during our tenure at Buena Vista Visual Effects were:
1996 ESCAPE FROM L.A.
JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH
THE PHANTOM
FEAR
1995 ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS
MORTAL KOMBAT
DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE
CONGO
OPERATION DUMBO DROP
1994 THE SANTA CLAUSE
1993 DAVE
1992 HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID
In 1996, Disney had just completed it's purchase of Dream Quest Images, located in Simi Valley which was responsible for visual effects in such films as Crimson Tide and Total Recall. Dream Quest became a wholly-owned Disney property in 1996. Dream Quest Images then later became The Secret Lab, for a short time, then Walt Disney Feature Animation took over and you know the rest after Pixar was acquired.
Thus, this award represents a time and place when the world of visual effects was still pioneering work using, by today's standards, ancient computers, models and other methods to achieve the desired effect.
This lighted award recognition recognizes that time period and that hard work of the folks who were part of Buena Vista Visual Effects. It truly is a one-of-a-kind item of which, if the others still exists, is quite rare indeed. If nothing else, it is a beautifully crafted piece of art featuring the Walt Disney Company Castle logo.
