After his apprenticeship as a lithographer, he trained in painting in Munich from 1885. In 1893 he moved to Solothurn and later to Basel, where he founded a ladies' painting school. After a period in which he mainly devoted himself to watercolor painting, he later switched to artist graphics. Around 100 bookplates in different techniques testify to his versatile skills.
