Description
DURAND: THE MAN AND HIS GLASSby Edward J. Meschi, The Art Glass Press/Antique Publications, OH, 1998.
Wonderfully illustrated in color and black-and-white, this scarce out-of-print book reviews the history and production of Durand art glass including prices [as of date of publication].
The author has “compiled photos of more than 500 pieces from some of the finest collections known, in an attempt to give everyone who reads and views this book an exhilarating voyage into the seldom seen beauty of Durand art glass. The classic shapes, beautiful decorations and extensive colors, along with many rare, one-of-a-kind and experimental pieces should make this publication the most complete of its kind. I have documented more than 170 shapes with the corresponding numbers used to identify them. I have shown all of the basic signature types, along with variations and paper labels in order to familiarize you with what is authentic. I have compiled a list of terminology used by Durand and clearly defined those terms in order to achieve a more uniform language amongst collectors and dealers alike. I have explained how the many types and decorations of glass were made. I have shown most of the cuttings used on cased and uncased glass and devised a simple but effective cataloging system so they can be described without having to be an expert in cut glass. I have paid homage to a group of artisans that were second to none and to their founder, Victor Durand in his proper place in the history of glass making and bring Durand art glass to a higher level of appreciation in the art world.”
