    Description

Long out-of-print, this early definitive reference book is the story of the New England Glass Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, which ran from 1818 to 1888.  Although this place is less well known than the Sandwich works, it was at one time the largest glass house in the world.
    CAMBRIDGE GLASS 1818 TO 1888
by Lura Woodside Watkins, Bramhall House, NY, 1930  reprint (ca 1960).
This book is based upon research done by visiting some thirty families whose relatives had been connected with the works, and by studying newspapers, land records and other documents.  By unearthing this information, the author was able to give the New England Glass Company credit due it for much of our finest glass and to write an authentic history of an industry once so important.  The illustrations of glass in the book were made from authentic specimens found in the homes of former workmen.  Products include fine blown and cut ware and every type of engraved and decorated glass known in the Victorian era.  Also discussed is colored glass, especially ruby, which was most famous.  Illustrated with black and white photographs, etchings, and line drawings, this authoritative, out-of-print reference book is one of the leading references on the subject of Cambridge glass.
