Notable Features:
This ring was handmade during the Retro period in the Art Deco era. Composed of 14k yellow gold, the ring features a huge tourmaline stone and an elegant rope twist design.
The use of such a gigantic, sparkling stone in this ring is an excellent example
of the
Hollywood Regency style, which rose to popularity during the Retro period. Reflecting their large, memorable personalities, Hollywood celebrities and socialites during this time would adorn themselves with sumptuous, glamorous jewelry, usually featuring huge stones. This ring was made in the style of Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, and Tiffany designs that were influencing the Hollywood Regency style, making the viewer think of the likes of Ava Gardner, Katharine Hepburn, and Vivien Leigh.
The large tourmaline stone is deep olive green in hue and semi-translucent, which allows light to filter through the stone's body, illuminating its hue. Light reflects off the stone's emerald cut facets with eye-catching sparkle. The stone rests securely in a four-pronged yellow gold basket setting, the warm hue of the gold a lovely complement to the deep green stone. The open sides of the setting allow for display of the tourmaline from multiple angles. This setting also raises the stone just under one-half of an inch off the finger, making it impossible to miss. Each end of the stone's undergallery is adorned with rope twist motifs which appear to wrap around the basket setting. The space between the ring's split shoulders also contains rope twist motifs which have an elegantly draped appearance.
The wearer of this ring at a Hollywood party certainly would have caught the eyes of fellow attendees.
The 14k yellow gold band of the ring is smooth and polished for comfortable wear. The generous amount of 14k yellow gold used in the ring gives it an impressive item weight value of 5. A classic example of Hollywood Regency jewelry from the Retro period, this ring would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to recall the Golden Age of Hollywood and preserve this piece of cultural history.
Damage:
Age appropriate wear. There is very minor facet wear to the face of the stone in several areas, but this is difficult to see without a jeweler's loupe. There is also light patina on some areas of the yellow gold, but this does not affect wear.

The History
The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period, jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, and this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand.
Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the use of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral.
The Hollywood Regency style came into fashion during the 1930s, ushered along by the Golden Age of Hollywood. This style was heralded by bright, contrasting colors and modernization of the opulence of Baroque styles, featuring a deliberately frivolous extravagance that screamed glitz and glamour. “Big girls need big diamonds” was taken to heart, and the gorgeous Hollywood stars decked themselves appropriately, with blindingly glittering jewels to showcase their lives of luxury.
Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone that comes in a wide array of colors and has been fundamental in jewelry for centuries. The Empress Dowager Cixi, the last Empress of China, loved pink tourmaline and bought large quantities of the stone from the Himalaya Mine, located in California, which, along with Maine, was one of the world’s largest tourmaline mines in the world.
